Offham Hill (The Battle of Lewes, 1264)
An original piece depicting the battle between Simon de Montfort & Henry III
Henry III was an autocratic monarch, who was extremely unpopular with his barons. Simon de Montfort, the leader of the barons, rebelled in what was known as the Second Barons’ War.
After harrying the King’s army throughout the south east, Henry III reached Lewes where he encamped at St. Pancras Priory, with a force of Infantry, whilst his cavalry, under the command of his son, Prince Edward (later King Edward I) was stationed at Lewes Castle.
Simon de Montfort’s army was encamped at Fletching, and marched through the early hours of the morning and moved to Offham Hill, just north of Lewes, taking King Henry’s forces by surprise.
Raising the alarm with a bell from the Priory, Prince Edward led a cavalry charge against the Londoners (a force of approximately 3000, poorly trained, and poorly armed amateurs). He pursued them relentlessly, whilst leaving the rest of the King’s army unsupported.
Henry sent his infantry into battle up the hill, whilst de Montfort’s men defended the top of the hill. Although Henry’s army was much greater (approximately twice the size) and much better trained and equipped, they were unable to break de Montfort’s ranks, and were forced down the hill into Lewes where they retreated to the castle and priory.
Edward returned with his weary cavalrymen, too late, and the King was forced to surrender.
Simon de Montford became the unacknowledged leader of the country, until he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Evesham in August, 1265.
