Nigel Simmons grew up in East Sussex and was introduced to the fun of playing the Bb Bass with the Hastings Youth Band, progressing on to Sussex Brass, the senior band within four months. He then went on to study Tuba at the Royal College of Music with John Jenkins (Philharmonia), and Piano with Barbara Hill (London Bach Orchestra).
After graduation, he returned to the south coast, conducting various brass bands, Sussex Brass, Handcross Brass, Friday-Ad Brass, and Friary Brass Bands.
All this time, he started arranging and composing for various groups, as well as jazz playing with various groups in the area. In addition, he played tuba with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra, as well as arranging music for them, including "over the top" arrangements of Christmas carols, as requested by the orchestra's Musical Director, Mark Andrew-James.
Since 2009, he has been playing with Friary Brass Band, in Woking, at championship level. He also directs their ten-piece brass ensemble.
In addition to all of the above, he is President of LGB Brass (Lewes, Glynde & Beddingham Brass Band)
In his spare time (!), he is still writing for all sorts of instrumental groups, mainly brass based, from Brass Quintets, up to full Brass and Concert Band.
